Dear Mr. Moy:

I'm writing to express my frustration with the U.S. Mint's recent decision to reject the designs for the District of Columbia quarter because they included the phrase "Taxation Without Representation." I feel this dismissal is unwarranted and unfair. We don't have representation in Congress, and we don't have home rule. The least you could do is allow us to design our own quarter.

A founding principle of our nation was that nobody should be subject to "taxation without representation." The founding fathers pledged their lives, liberty, and fortunes to ensure that future generations of Americans would enjoy the blessings of representational democracy.

Our proposed slogan is much like the New Hampshire quarter that used another historical American slogan: "Live Free or Die," which was not rejected.  If New Hampshire can have that slogan, why not us?

In the official rejection letter, the U.S. Mint writes that it "looks forward to working with District officials to develop narratives that will lead to a quarter honoring the District of Columbia of which the entire Nation can be proud."  One can only assume that the U.S. Mint is not proud of the fact that 600,000 Americans are denied basic representation in their own government.  This injustice defines the District of Columbia more than panda bears or cherry blossoms, and I strongly feel it should be on our state quarter.

I urge you to reconsider the District's initial design submissions that include the phrase "Taxation Without Representation." The expression both describes the principles upon which our nation was founded – and serves as a reminder that the promise of American representation government has not yet reached all of its citizens.
