I am writing to voice my support of S. 1257, the District of Columbia House Voting Rights Act of 2007. I ask that you become a cosponsor in the Senate and work to enact this legislation that would give the residents of the District of Columbia a voting member of Congress for the first time.

This bill, which passed the House on April 19, will address an injustice that has existed for over 200 years. There are over 600,000 people living in the District of Columbia who have no voting representation in Congress. These fellow Americans pay taxes, serve on juries, and fight in wars. As we fight for democracy around the globe it is shameful that we deny Americans living in the nation's capital the fundamental representation in their own government.
